Hmm.. I think I smell bleach in the water.

Well all weekend, I have been smelling bleach in the water. At first, I asked my roommate about it and she said she didn’t smell anything so I thot it was just me.  It wasn’t until a friend of hers came by and said she was smelling bleach in her shower also.  I asked one of my other friends who is in her second term here and she mentioned that sometimes the water treatment plants put too much chlorine in the water as they attempt to purify it to be best of their ability.  My thoughts were how long will this be for? and how much chlorine did they really put in it? Out of school today and we are not sure exactly why.  I think it has something to do with the schedule they try to maintain every term. They gave us this day off so that every term students will have the same amount of days off.  I am not complaining day, I need a day to review, do groceries and also take a trip to town and do some shopping.  I will be heading to the grocery store in another 20 minutes and then to Dr. B anatomy review session.  Going to Dr. B review session is a little bit nerve wrecking.  He feels as if he attacks us with questions. To make matters worse, he knows everyone name and get this he doesn’t even refer to me as Tope like everyone does he makes it a point to call me Temitope.  Sometimes, I try to chill in the back of the lab to avoid him calling on me but that even makes me a target.  Its not that I don’t know the answer to the questions, the problem his he continues to ask you questions until you have reached your breaking point.  I have seen him almost bring grown men into tears it is crazy, but funny at times. Well, his review sessions are very helpful but it is important that one comes prepared everytime.

This morning, I read on the web about a fatal plane crash in Nigeria.  The plane was flying from Abuja (Nigeria’s capital) to Sokoto and crashed upon lift off. May the souls of those that were lost in this terrible crash rest in peace. Amen.  Let’s have a moment of silence for them today.

 Stay blessed.

Thanksgiving in Grenada. No School. Yay!!!

Well still in school but no classes which feels good.  Today will be a day deciated to going over stuff that I might have ran through very quickly previously or stuff that I just don’t get.   I was up bright and early as usually and started studying at about 9am.   Its nice to have a day off during the week, I feel it makes the week go faster and this weekend will be a 3-day weekend so I am defiinitely looking forward to that.  Last night I had another cultural experience.  The Indians at my school had what they call a “Raas Night” They was dancing and a local indian restaurant catered the food.  The food was really good although I found it to be a tad bit expensive anyways that money is spent now.  Anatomy is piling up pretty quick since midterm. We finished abdominal region yesterday and quickly moving on to Sacral plexus, well I am doing my best to stay on top of things and so far it looks like I am doing well.  I am starting to really understand how I will use all this information I am trying to soak up in my practice.  I am so looking foward to that.  I still miss home but having so much to do sure helps.

Stay blessed.

The overwhelming feeling begins……….. as we approach finals.

After midterms, I remember writing “don’t know what to do with myself” well I do now.   There’s quite a bit of work to do. Although I am staying on top of things. I find that I don’t have much time to come up for air.  Anyways, the semester is coming to an end pretty soon.  I am sure Mas can’t wait.  I know I can’t.   Today was a very frustrating day and I found myself repeatedly saying ” I just wanna go home.” Although everything is not like it is at home, they were some comfort things that made it a little bit easier.  Like having my laptop and having access online, and also not having to wear closed toe shoes in all this heat.  Well I  am now experiencing what it is like to not have those.  I orderered a replacement for my charger two weekends ago.  I call the computer store this morning to ask them if they received the charger from the manufacturer yet.  They proceeded to tell me they couldn’t order it from the main manufacturer (Dell) which was who they initially told me they were going to order it from. I thot to myself “What crap?”  I went after to class to collect my deposit that I had paid pending the receipt of the charger.   I also decided to find some flip flops at the mall,  there’s something really unsettling about paying 65-85$EC for flip flops that are just a little better than the ones you get at old navy.  Right now, I am motivated to start collecting old navy flip flops in every color.  I will definitely put that to good use.  Anyways, its just those little things that matter to me sometimes but I guess I have to learn to deal with it.  And let my frustration be very temporary.  Other than that.. things are okay. I am getting studying done and working out as usual.  I just miss home like crazy (Do I say that after every blog? :???:  )

SandBlast 2006

Ok, today was a very surreal day.  The student government here at St. Georges Univ. School of Medicine organize an event that everyone looks forward to called “sandblast” its pretty much a huge beach party.  I decided to join my roommate and friends and it was a blast.  I had originally planned to be there for just 2hours but I ended up there for about 4hours.  It was free drinks for everyone, dancing, eating and a bunch of other fun games like throwing water baloons at your profs, playing basket ball and other other things.   The most interesting part was getting an opportunity to lyme(trini term for hang out/chill) with the professors or even dean of students.  It was my first time at the beach in Grenada and it was really nice.  Got in the water even though i have no idea out to swim.  Neways it was a blast, and everyone is so tired, its very quiet around here on campus which is unusual unless we are having exams.  At sandblast, i kept saying to myself, ” I can’t believe I am in medschool” and that we are all future doctors.  Its a great thing!

 Stay blessed.

Don’t know what to do with myself..

It seems like we have so  much time on our hands now, after midterms, I guess thats the illusion they gives us a week before everything hits us like a ton of bricks again.  Well, I am glad we have a somewhat mellow week.  I am actually sleeping in and still getting my work done.  This Saturday is Sandblast in Grenada, an invent organized by the st. George’s university student government. I have heard that its a  family function but what kinda of family function includes students and alcohol, I guess this one.  It should be fun from what I hear. If I do decide to go I will document my experience.  I am finally getting my hair done this Friday.  My hair is looking jacked up right now and I am desperate to get it fixed.  A lady will be coming to my room on Friday to hook a sistah up.

For those of you that read my blog in which I complained about having to get up so early for anatomy lab, well I am happy and sad to say the schedule changed after midterms. Now, I have anatomy lab on Thursday at 10am.   I guess i have to deal with it. I have gotten used to gettin up early on Tuesdays, that’s okay though.  My adapter situation is really upsetting me, after going to the computer store on saturday to order a new adapter that will supposedly arrive by today or friday, the lady from the store called me today asking for a service tag no.  It took everything in me not to go off on her.  its so difficult not having a computer. I don’t know how Mo (lab partner&friend)does it.

I had an adventure today, I actually left the school campus and went to St. Georges (the city) I went in search for hair to get my braids done on Friday.  It is amazing were I get my motivation from sometimes. I whined and whined this morning (Diggity you know how i whine) to my roommate about having to catch the reggae bus to the city to buy hair. I was glad when Ms. G (friend of roommate) said she needed to go to St. Georges too.  We went together and it was fun, even though it was extremely hot.  St. Georges reminds me so much of lagos, just not as big but almost as rowdy, but that’s how we love it in lagos.  Okay, I have to go to my room, I am tired.

 Stay Blessed.

Finally, a weekend to relax.

Midterms went well. I am glad, because now this weekend could actually be a nice one.  I am so excited that I only have about a month and a half left in Grenada and then I get to go home.  My roommate went home this weekend. remember I said she’s from Trinidad so the flight was only about a 30minute flight home.  I get the room all to myself. Thats nice for a change.  I will enjoy it.   My adaptor for my computer died on me this week. It was very frustrating, I was crying to mas on the phone and he knew just what to say to calm my nerves down.  It was very frustrating because a lot of my class notes are on the internet and it is always nice to access all that stuff in the comfort of your own room. I guess I will have to be making multiple trips to the library until I get the one I ordered.  This week of testing was crucial not just for me but for all my peers also.  Once it was over, I could hear the screaming in the hallways, the popping of different beer bottles and people in the bathing suits heading to the beach. Its nice to see med students struggling all through the week and then managing to take a break for themselves. I am learning so much more about science, and its great.  Sometimes, I get tired of studying though but I guess thats what all doctors have to deal with. Miss mom and dad a lot and can’t wait to chat with my sisters online.  Hopefully that will happen sometime today.

Two down, one to go..

WOW, I am so glad that I only have one more midterm exam coming up this Friday.  I have been on my butt studying longer than I would like to but eventually it pays off.  I had Anatomy on monday which was long and tough, hope I did well.  Today, I had Histology which I must say was a lot better than Anatomy but still quite long.  I am so tired I don’t know what to do with myself.  I know! Study biochem.  I have that on Friday.   I haven’t looked forward to any Friday as much as I am looking foward to this one, the fact that I get a whole weekend without any assignments or reading hanging on to my shoulders makes me feel so good.  I can finally, chill out, watch a movie, have some popcorn and just relax all by myself. I haven’t had that in so long.  October is already here, two more months and I will be on my way home, can’t wait.  I miss my family and mas like crazy.  Mas, congratulations on your new site, you guys should check it out and make a purchase. Website address is www.myroyaltee.com.

Tired of dreaming about Anatomy and biochem …

Its amazing how studying can affect you.  It is not enough that I am studying all day long I am also studying in my sleep.  Last night I was dreaming ” Fibularis longus, Fibularis brevis innervated by superficial branch of the common fibular nerve.” For those of you that don’t know those are muscles on the lateral side of the leg.  These are the kinds of dreams that I have. If I am not thinking of muscles and what nerves innervate them I am thinking Beta oxidation of fatty acids (breakdown of fat in layman’s terms). So I have 4 hours of sleep and a few seconds of dreaming of anatomy and biochem is just too much.  I guess the important thing is that I am actually learning all these.

I am glad that I finally got the heart down.  I don’t know if i mentioned this before, but last week I was really having difficulty visualizing the heart and how to know if I am looking at the back/front or if this is an artery and if it is, what artery is it.  You see the reason for this is that many times in school , u only really see the heart in pictures. its a perfect picture, color coded, easy to identify so that made it a little bit difficult especially now I have to start thinking in 3 dimensions.  Anyways,Happy to say I got it down, I have it down so well now that I even presented to my peers in Anatomy wet lab this morning. My roommate is cooking with onions, my eyes are starting to burn I am gonna stop here and get out before tears actually start coming out of my eyes. .  there goes one drop.
