Back Home!

Glad to report that 3rd term went well and I am all about getting some rest before 4th term gets here. So I am home in Minneapolis, chilling with my family and my man and that’s all I have wanted for a very long time. It was a long flight home, I flew from Grenada to Trinidad on the 23rd of June, slept at a guest house in the ghetto in Trinidad, on the 24th, I boarded a continental airline flight to Houston and then to Minneapolis. so like I said, it was a long trip but well worth it.
its nice to be home because my Mom and Aunty are here for a few weeks, so it is nice spending some time with them.    So besides hanging out countless of times and sleeping to almost noon  and just chillin, i won’t be doing much besides spending tons of money i don’t really have.  hmmm oh well.

Only 2 more days left

Wow, I am finally reaching the end of 3rd term, wow what a good feeling am going to have when I finish my last exam on Friday morning.  It will be superb.    I have been in Grenada for 6 months straight, I must say some days it seemed to go fast and other days it just seemed extremely slow.  But now, I can look back and say wow… I have gotten a lot of work done in this past 6m.   I hope this summer break will be filled with more personal growth, great experiences and just plenty to time to just rest and not study.  I will be going to Thailand for two weeks that would be a very nice experience… looking forward to that.  So that means I will be blogging about thailand since its medical school related.   Ok well, gotta go study for my last exam.  Wish me the best.

Fish Friday

I finally got to go to Fish Friday yesterday. It wasn’t bad at all. Since first term, every Friday I always hear people talking about going to Fish Friday but never got a chance to go. Yesterday, I got on the reggae bus and headed to the town of Guyoave with Mo and the rest of the guys. It was a long trip I think it took us almost 35-45minutes to actually get to our destination. Since it was so late at night it was too dark to see much. I would definitely like to take that drive during the day. The drivers of the buses both ways drove crazy up and down the many hills.  It was as if we were on a roller coaster. I know of a couple of people that actually got motion sickness. I was cool though.

Fish Friday, what is it? Just a time to chill and eat all types of meals made from seafood (no octopus included… haha). I had some shrimp pasta which I didn’t enjoy very much, and some bakes and fish which was quite good. I had a couple bites from Mo’s seafood pizza which was quite good and the best of all was a well seasoned red snapper. It was really good. I actually finished that one unlike the other meals I had tried. It was fun. Didn’t have any desert but no complaints I had enough of the other stuff already. There were also a few musicians performing, they were pretty good.

All in all, it was a crazy drive, nice meal and not a very late evening. came back and continued taking out my braids.

The doctor/patient relationship

This week in behavioral science we have been learning about the Doctor/Patient relationship. Just deciding to become a doctor is not even all you need. There is so much about yourself that you have to evaluate as you work towards becoming a Doctor and also once you become one. after reading a chapter on this topic in Stoudemire I realized that there is still more growth required. I find myself thinking of things that I never had to think about. I remember when I applied to med school , I mentioned something about being empathetic, compassionate, and all that good skills we all want our Doctors to have. Did I really know what it meant to be empathetic, if I didn’t then I certainly do now and I feel that there’s still some growth to be made. Haven’t ever been in any serious medical illness, (Thank God) can I really fathom what it means to be a patient. It would wrong to tell my patients I truly understand what they are going through when I don’t. I do pray and hope that the little empathy that I have right now and need to develop further would not be destroyed by the stresses of basic sciences, clinicals and residency. I hope that I will be able to relate to my patients in ways that I have always wanted a Doctor to relate to me. I do know that I have the listening abilities, the knowledge continues to develop and I do know that I am a compassionate person, but it seems that empathy counts for a whole lot and to be honest there really is a need for growth in that department. </div>
<div></div>
<div>Besides being empathetic towards your patient you also have to make sure that you maintain the invisible boundaries you have with your patients. As quickly as some of us like others or not like others those type of feelings MUST not interfere with you and your patient and the treatment you render. So many things to think about and also to remember as I continue on this journey.

What a wonderful day it was part 2

So in continuation of my birthday celebration. My friend Mori and a few of our other friends got together and threw me a surprise party. I remember during class I was telling my friend Mo that I wa so tired and I really didn’t feel like doing anything more but go home take a nap and study. I was so behind and I was beginning to feel a bit anxious. I had discussed with Mori a few days before that, that I would just want to celebrate by having a dinner with close friends on Saturday night but after realizing how behind I was I was contemplating actually cancelling the whole thing (didn’t mention that to Mori though). I get home after class and I lay down to take an hour nap after I wake up from my nap, I receive an IM from Moriam saying that she was having issues with her man that she needs to tell me what the problem face to face. being so worried about her , I got out of my bed, in my lounge wear, put a scarf around my shoulders and walk down the hall to her room. I get there, knock on her door, she opens the door and everyone yells ‘ SURPRISE!!!” there were so many people there to celebrate I was shocked. I was so embarassed I began to actually walk away from her room and Mo comes to get me asking “Where are you going?” It was a lovely celebration. We had pizza, cake, ice cream, we danced a bit, took a lot of pictures and laughed a lot. I felt so special. I am so thankful to everyone involved in the planning and everyone that came to celebrate with me. It was a lovely surprise… never had one like it before. Here are some pictures from part 2.

What a wonderful day it was part 1

As you all know my birthday was the 5th of June but I can honestly say I have never had such a nice one. It started even before the clock striked 12midnight. My roommate Beks and Gilda had a lovely surprise for me along with their boyfriends and our other friend Anthony who lives across the hall. It was around 11.30pm when there was a loud knock on our door it was so loud that it made me so angry. I rushed to the door just to give whoever was on the other side of it a piece of mind. I opened the door and there was Beks and Gilda, Beks holding the cake with quite a number of lit birthday candles and Anthony holding a couple of baloons that ready happy birthday. It was a very big surprised i couldn’t believe it. So Beks, Gilda, Anthony, Kam and Joe sang happy birthday to me and then I opened my birthday gift from Beks and Gilda it was a NW50 Mac Makeup (studio fix) I was so excited because the other one I had turned into saw dust a few weeks back. I felt so blessed to have friends that could be so kind to me on such a special day. So that was part one and there’s 3 more parts. I went to bed with a big smile on my face. Thank God for Beks, Gilda, Kam, Joe and Anthony.

Trip to isla margarita was well worth it…

This break was definitely one that I needed. A few weeks ago as I mentioned in my earlier blog I decided to take a trip to Margarita Island with 6 other friends. So we booked out flights which wasn’t too expensive and booked our hotel room (we got a suite) that we all shared and right before we left took our first exam and off we went. Margarita Island is an island in venezuela in the caribbean sea. It was a beautiful island. We left Friday June 1st and returned yesterday. So we were there for two nights. It was too much fun. On our arrival there, we checked into our hotels and went right away to convert our money from US dollars to Bolivares. I exchanged $200 dollars which if I remember correctly turned out to be 300,000 bolivares. After exchanging our monies, we walked thru the streets of downtown to find a place to eat called Pundo de criollo which I think translates into Creole point. The food was good but the weirdest meal was the sea food pasta ordered by a couple of my friends that included a baby octopus (yuck). After that we took a cab backed to our hotel room and prepared for our event for the night. We headed to a club called Kamy beach. It was 90’s music night but my friends and I figured we wouldnt’ be able to tell the difference anyways since it was going to be mostly spanish music (mostly salsa, reggaeton and others). I went with my friends Mori and Q while the other chicas went to the casino. It was nice but to be honest we stood out like sore thumbs they could tell we weren’t from there especially since none of us spoke spanish fluently but we got by. music is a universal language. we got down just like they did :) The other night we attened another club “nikky beach” it was packed and nice. We had dinner at the hard rock cafe in the Sambill mall and did a little shopping. Unfortunately we didnt’ get to go to the beach because the clouds got really gray. we went to the pool at the hotel instead and just chilled out. Overall, it was fun to get away from Grenada, speak some spanish and experience another culture even if it was just for a few days. BTW, that 300,000 bolivares went a long way.
